VMware Tools is a suite of utilities that enhances the performance of the virtual machine’s guest operating system and improves management of the virtual machine. Installing VMware Tools in the guest operating system is vital. Although the guest operating system can run without VMware Tools, you lose important functionality and convenience. Windows Server 2008 Core requires a simple additional step to install these essential tools.

Typically when you choose to install VMware Tools a virtual CD is mounted as D:\ on the guest operating system which spawns an AutoRun dialog box in most versions of the Windows Operating System. On a Windows Server 2008 Core server there is no AutoRun feature so we must manually execute the setup executable to install the VMware Tools.
