Today I tried installing software from CD onto my Windows 7 Ultimate (x32) system and I encountered a read error on the media. Since I have a valid Serial Number for the software, I decided to fire up uTorrent v1.8.5 (Build 17414) and download the CD ISO. The torrent started downloading at over 700 kB/sec and was 35% complete when the transfer failed with the following error.
Error: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open.
I have been using uTorrent for months on this computer and had downloaded files that were over 4 Gigabytes in size without problems. There were no Explorer windows or any other programs open that might be locking the file or folder, so I began to suspect that my AVG Free v9.0.725 antivirus software.
After a bit of research, I discovered that the AVG Resident Shield feature actively scans all files you work with in the background. Since this could easily cause access conflicts I went into the uTorrent Preferences and checked what download directory it was using. Then I opened AVG to the Resident Shield section and clicked the Manage Exceptions button. I added an exception to exclude the uTorrent download directory from being scanned by Resident Shield and saved my changes.
Once I had the directory excluded, I was able to start the torrent downloading again and have not encountered the error since. I’m not sure if AVG or uTorrent is to blame for this problem but excluding the download directory from resident shield definitely eliminated the problem.
